Joachim Knuf serves as the principal strategist for lean enterprise transformation at The Institute for Lean Systems in Louisville , KY. He is responsible for supporting organizations launching their lean transformation during the initial definition of their enterprise strategy and advises them subsequently in all phases of its execution. As faculty, he develops and delivers a variety of executive, certification and special programs.

Dr. Knuf is a former Associate Professor for Organizational Communication at the University of Kentucky and before that worked at The Ohio State University and the University of Bonn . As an Associate Professor for Lean Enterprise Development at the University of Kentucky Center for Manufacturing he was one of the architects of the model lean manufacturing research and education program created at the invitation of Toyota Motor Manufacturing between 1994 and 2006. During his tenure at the University of Kentucky , Dr. Knuf was recognized repeatedly as an outstanding educator.

Dr. Knuf received his doctorate in social anthropology from the University of Oxford in 1986. He approaches organizations as evolving complex structures composed of mutually dependent cultural, social and economic subsystems linked through multiple task, communication and governance relationships. This comprehensive view allows him to identify significant synergy and performance potentials that in the transformation to a lean system can be tapped and aligned with customer value propositions specific to the organization in order to increase its competitiveness.

With Mark Lauer and Deb Haney, Dr. Knuf has created a turn-key training program used by many companies to introduce the concepts and practices of lean manufacturing to their employees. Lean 101: Lean manufacturing foundations for work teams was published in 2003 by PKI in Bloomington , IN ; Spanish, Portuguese and Russian versions are also in use. Most recently he and Mark Lauer have published a major chapter outlining their view of the lean system, “ Normal excellence: Lean human performance technology and the Toyota Production System,” published in J. A. Pershing (ed.), (2006). Handbook of human performance technology: Principles, practices, potential (pp. 717-742). San Francisco , CA : John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Prior to joining the Institute for Lean Systems, Dr. Knuf served as a founding board member of the Lean Manufacturing Network, a partnership of companies promoting the lean enterprise. As faculty of the University of Kentucky Lean Leadership Institute he introduced hundreds of executives of leading domestic and international companies to leadership principles for the lean transformation. His courses on organizational learning and enterprise leadership have qualified thousands of graduates for the original University of Kentucky Lean Manufacturing Certification , precursor to the ILS certification series. He has collaborated with the Society of Automotive Engineers and the US Navy's Center for Best Manufacturing Practices at the University of Maryland in documenting best practices in lean operation at leading manufacturers, resulting in SAE Standards J4000, Identification and Measurement of Best Practices in Implementation of Lean Operation and SAE J4001 , Implementation of Lean Operations User Manual. He has delivered workshops on lean manufacturing transformation strategies through the National Technological University satellite broadcast system and is a regular speaker at corporate functions in the US and abroad, at national and international conferences, industry meetings, and in management education programs. Companies that have invited him to speak include Boeing, Coca-Cola, Cooper Standard Automotive, Donaldson Company, General Electric, General Motors, Harley-Davidson, Kennametal, Nike, Nypro and Lockheed Martin.
